Services for Charles E. Cottrill Jr. will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Burnside Funeral Home Chapel in Bridgeport, W.Va. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. Mr. Cottrill, 75, of Meridian, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at The Specialty Hospital of Meridian. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was a graduate of Roosevelt Wilson High School and Salem College in West Virginia. Mr. Cottrill received his master's degree from Mississippi State University. He retired from Lockheed Georgia in 1990 after more than 28 years. For 25 years his passion was coaching young athletes in the Meridian area in baseball and football. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors include his wife of more than 57 years, Avis Cottrill of Meridian; sons, Norman Cottrill and his wife, Karen, of Scott Depot, W.Va. and Ernie Cottrill and his wife, Jenny, of Collinsville; daughters, Shirley E. Alford and her husband, Howard of Progress, Peggy J. Wilson and her husband, Alan, of Austin, Texas and Christina J. Slayton and her husband, Van, of Collinsville; grandchildren, Casey, Andrew, Sela, Matt, Josh, Nicki, Kelly, Connor, Emily, Lucas, Dalton and Lindsey and great-grandchildren, Savannah and Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Edna Cottrill. Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Meridian and Sunday from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Bridgeport, W.Va.
