Simon Thomas Means, 85, of Altoona died Saturday at his residence. He was born in Coolspring, Jefferson County, son of Samuel T. and Velma B. (Wolfgang) Means. He married Elois Williams April 9, 1946, in Punxsutawney. Surviving are his wife; four children: Paul L. Means of Newport News, Va., John Means of Wilsons, Va., Sandy Ragsdale of Colonial Heights, Va., and Glen Means of Altoona; a brother, Dale Means of Lockport, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was a member of First Church of the Brethren, Altoona. Mr. Means was a 1941 graduate of Punxsutawney High School. He retired in 1985 as a mechanic in the motor pool of the Altoona office of the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years of service. He previously was a service manager for the former Condrin automobile dealership. He served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Tech 5 during WWII. Mr. Means enjoyed hunting and fishing. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at the funeral home with the Rev. Donald Fornwalt officiating. Interment at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville, Pa.
