Mrs. M. L. Batey was born in Crittenden County, Ky., March 7, 1849, and passed away at the home of her son, William Batey, in Golconda, Ill., June 8, 1927, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 1 day. She was the daughter of Captain and Mrs. Franklin, who moved to Illinois during the Civil War.

The deceased was married to William Henry Batey, February 25, 1869, and to this union were born 8 children, 4 of whom preceded her to the better land. The children who survive are: Mrs. Maude Pyland, Gary, Ind.; Mrs. Ona Dowdell, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Charles Batey, of Harrisburg, Ill.; and William Batey, of Golconda. Besides these she leaves 13 grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and a host of friends.

“Aunt Lou,” as she was familiarly known was well known throughout this county, and was loved by all who knew her.

She professed faith in God at the age of sixteen and was one of the oldest members of the Dixon Springs M. E. church. All through the years she has lived in an intimate and blessed communion with her Savior, and often expressed the fact that she had never grown tired. She was a constant reader of her Bible and was the instrument in God’s hand in winning many souls for Him.

Funeral services were conducted from the residence in Golconda, to the Dixon Springs M. E. church, Friday, where Rev. C. L. Phifer, pastor of the Golconda M. E. church preached the sermon and thence to the Dixon Springs cemetery, where interment occurred.
