Stella Frances Jennings Naranjo, 82, passed away December 14, 2008 after a long illness. She is survived by her son, Dr. Jennings Neal Naranjo, his wife, Mary Ann Naranjo, and their children, Mary Katherine Naranjo and Jennings Neal Naranjo II, all of Lufkin. Also surviving is her son-in-law, T. Mitchell Gibson of Lufkin, widower of her late daughter, Mary Stella Frances Naranjo-Gibson. Her husband of 49 years, J. Neal Naranjo, preceded her in death. Also preceding her were her father, Harold Cozart Jennings, whose grandfather, A.B. Jennings, rerouted the HE&WT railroad which resulted in the founding of Lufkin, and mother, Mary Fuller Jennings, whose father, Dr. William Coke Fuller, was a founder of Woodland Heights Hospital.
Stella Frances had been a pioneering businesswoman in Texas, the proprietor of Jennings Auto Supply and Machine Shop. Through that business, she was the only woman dealer for Lonestar and Evinrude Boats and for Evinrude Outboard Motors in the United States. She was also the first woman to test a jet ski for Evinrude. While running Jennings Auto Supply and Machine Shop, she helped design and build motors that set 17 world records. She also had the local dealership for Lionel Trains.
Stella Frances graduated from Lufkin High School in 1944. She was the first drum major at Lufkin Junior High School and the fourth drum major at LHS. A member of the National Honor Society at LHS, she attended SMU where she was an International Economics major, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and Zeta Phi Eta, and the National Professional Fraternity in Communication Arts and Sciences. While at SMU, she was President of the SMU YWCA, the International Student Council, and the SMU Geographical Society.
Besides being a businesswoman, a mother of twins, and a substitute school teacher, Stella Frances was active in the community. Her activities included being a member of the board of the Lufkin Community Concerts Association, 40 years on the Altar Guild at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, 3 years as President of the City Federation of Women's Clubs, and most recently the chair of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Drive. Her love of flowers led to her belonging to the Dogwood Garden Club for over 55 years, serving 2 years as President of the Lufkin Council of Garden Clubs, and becoming an International Flower Show Judge and a nationally certified Flower Show Judge - Life Rank. She was active with many organizations, including 12 years as a leader in the Girl Scouts, 10 years activity in the Boy Scouts, including serving as Den Mother, and membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and of the Daughters of the American Revolution and active in the Angelina County Genealogical Society. She was recognized for 60 years of active support of the Texas Democratic Party. Along with her late husband, J. Neal Naranjo, she was an avid fan of the University of Texas, which was founded by her great-great-granduncle, Governor Oran M. Roberts.

Honorary pallbearers include: Carlton Blake, Dr. Doyle Brashear, Eugene Brookshire, Daniel Burgess, Jack Darnell, Martin Lee Evans, Simon "Bubba" Henderson, Kent Henson, Dr. Karl Krohn, Dr. Kyle Krohn, Chester "Bubba" Lowery, Eddie McFarland, Hon. Jim McReynolds, Joe Ed Murray, Harold Newsom, Dr. Alex Orloff, Fred Preston, Ernest Rutland, Dr. Jimmy Tinkle, Dr. Jansen Todd, Allan Earl Vinson, Hon. Jim Wark, Hon. Charlie Wilson, Lt. David Young, Mayor Jack Gordon and Louis Bronaugh.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend M.L. Agnew and Reverend Lewis Jones officiating, followed by graveside services at Glendale Cemetery on East Lufkin Avenue.
