James K. Buckwalter, "Buck," age 91, of Miramar Beach, Fla., passed away in a local healthcare facility on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1917, in Philadelphia to Franklin Buckwalter and Esther Landis Kohr Buckwalter. He was Methodist by faith and a member of Destin United Methodist Church. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., in 1946-47. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a PBY pilot. His rank at time of discharge was lieutenant commander.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Buck began a career with Rubbermaid Corp. in Wooster, Ohio. He worked his way up to Vice President of Sales before departing in 1957. Buck then began his own business with the invention of Sleep Mate, a device to mask noises while sleeping. He founded Marpac Corp., currently located in Wilmington, N.C. Marpac manufactures this device and other models which have been sold throughout the world. Buck also enjoyed golf at Indian Bayou and fishing in the Gulf.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Gertrude (Trudy) Brown Buckwalter of Miramar Beach; his children, Janet Zimmerman and husband Dennis of Destin, Fla., James Kohr Buckwalter Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Mary Ann Dawson, also of Destin; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Destin United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m., also at the church, with Dr. Ken Taylor officiating. Following services, burial will be in Destin Memorial Cemetery.
