Russian Cosmonaut. On February 7, 1977, he with fellow Cosmonaut Commander Viktor Gorbatko, flew on the first mission to purge and replace the atmosphere on board a solar space station. After an 18 day flight to the Salyut 5 space station, in the Caucasus region, the two crew mates successfully docked with the outpost. Foremost in their objectives was they entered the station wearing only breathing masks to began testing the purity of the atmosphere. Their efforts in venting the toxic air out the airlock while pumping in compressed air resulted in complete success to replacing the station's air. The two cosmonauts returned to earth on February 25, 1977. They were praised for their mission's accomplishments by the government and space program's leaders, earning the title "Hero of the Soviet Union". Glazkov served as a flight engineer in the Soviet Air Force before being selected for cosmonaut training in October, 1965. He served as a pilot, parachutist and was a spacecraft communicator for many other joint flights. He also served as deputy director of flight activities and was part of the International Space Station project for the training of U.S. Astronauts. In 1989, he was appointed as the first deputy chief of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City and remained in position until his retirement in May, 2000.
