Monroe is my Grandpa

Monroe was born Oct 25,1890 in Peel, Marion Co., Arkansas to Isaac Wilson Hudson and Catherine Stevens/Stephens Hudson. He was the third of their eight children. Those children included: LaVada Lou (Vada),Isaac "Ike"; Sarah May;John B.; Margaret; Mary Leona and William "Bill".
Monroe also had one half brother, Thomas Sim and two half sisters: Mary J. and Elizabeth Angeline(Betsy-Bette)Combs (all mothered by Elizabeth Powers Hudson) On Dec.16,1915 Monroe married Gertrude McPherson and together they had five children. Children were; Verba L. Wagner; Monroe Jefferson ,Jr."M.J."; Rex J.; Charlene Leewright and Bradford.
Monroe farmed for many years in Missouri and Arkansas as well as working for the railroad in Springfield, Mo. as left-handed "fire knocker" in the roundhouse on the locomotives. Stories he related to me when I was a young lad and living next door. He told me of seeing the first trucks he ever saw on a flat car on the train coming through town. He had many a good dog during his life but the one I remember as a kid was "Old Skeeter" which was given to him by his son Bradford. The dog followed him everywhere.
After selling the farm and moving to California in the 1940's he worked as a mechanic at Benicia Arsenal Army Depot before retiring.
During retirement he enjoyed wood working, gardening, bee tending and visiting his cabin at Clear Lake, Ca.
He died on Nov. 29,1988 at age 98.

He was a good hard working man that is truly missed by all that knew and loved him.
