"Captain Sandy"
Joseph Snyder Cox, 80, local weather personality "Captain Sandy" died Saturday December 6, 2008 at his residence under the care of his family, friends and Hospice Savannah. Joe was born on Friday the 13th of January, 1928, in Frankfort, Kentucky. He was a Meteorologist in the United States Air Force serving in World War II. In subsequent years he was a disc jockey at various radio stations around the country, but he always had a fascination with the weather. In 1965 he settled in Savannah and assumed the roll of "Captain Sandy" the weatherman with WSAV TV. Wearing a nautical cap and windbreaker, and with the help of Wilbur the Weather Bird, Arthurmometer and Calamity Clam, he entertained and informed children and adults alike for more than a decade. Joe was the last person to carry on the tradition of "Captain Sandy". Joe was also a meteorologist for WJCL TV for 5 years. He loved to play golf, sail, ride his bike and spend time with his family.
Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret T. Cox, of Savannah; three daughters, Cindy Cox, of Nyack, NY; Connie Hicks, of Frankfort, KY; and Terry Cox, of Cold Spring, NY. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Hannah and Bekah; and one great-grandson, Aden.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 700 p.m., Monday, December 8, 2008 and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Memorial service will be 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with the Rev. John Anderson officiating.
