Dudley was born to John and Mary (Galyean) Hopkins.
Dudley was single and a farmer when he entered the service at age 24 on 6 Feb 1865 in Joliet, Illinois. He was joined by Captain Longworth. He was 6 foot tall, had light hair, light complexion, and blue eyes. He was in Company C of 147th Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out 20 Jan 1866 by Captain Wood in Savannah, Georgia. He was a member of Company E, 11th Illinois Infantry with which he served throughout the war between the states. He was a member of Bradford Post 55 G.A.R., of this city. Dudley and Elizabeth adopted Mary Magdalene Hopwood after her mother died.
"D.S. Hopkins, 'Uncle Dud,' died after a long illness due to old age at his home. He was well known and liked by all as he led an upright Christian life and was a friend to both old and young. His wife, Elizabeth survives him.
He had the following wives before Lizzie Hopkins. Lucinda Hutchins, and Nancy Ann Smith.
