Col. Joseph E. Carberry was one of a group of 25 Army men who were selected in 1913 to serve as the Army's first military aviators. These 25 men formed the genesis of the United State Air Force. Mr. Carberry flew a Curtiss Jenny while serving with Gen. Pershing on the Mexican border and in 1915 established an Army altitude record of 11,690 feet in the same plane. During World War I Captain Carberry was assigned to General Pershing's staff and was in charge of establishing air fields in France. An honor graduate of the West Point class of 1910, he retired from military service in 1924 and had lived in California since 1933.
