Bolsar Carpenter was born to Joseph & Elizabeth Carpenter. His name is spelled Bolser on his gravestone.

His first name has been found to have many spellings, Bolsar, Balzer, Baltzer, Balthazer in church records along with his last name which is listed as Zimmerman (the German equivalent of Carpenter) in those same records. He was ordained as Elder in the Reformed Church of Greenwich, Sussex, NJ in May 16, 1790 and then as Deacon in 1793 in records found. But Greenwich Presbyterian Church can not be documented as existing until 1834 or 1835. He most likely was a elder and deacon in St. John's Union Church which was used by the Lutheran & Presbyterian churches which later became St. James Lutheran Church. This would explain why he was buried in St. James Lutheran Cemetery and his wife, Margaret was buried in Greenwich Cemetery. His last name in those records refer to him as Zimmerman.

He had 8 children with his wife, Margaret Schmacher Carpenter: Mary C., Isaac, Elizabeth, Catharine, Anna, Sarah, Joseph B. & Samuel D. Carpenter.
