16 yrs old

Resided within the 3200 block of West Douglas Boulevard in Chicago.

He and two classmates, Melvin Choice III, 17, and Jimmy Avant, 18 drowned after sneaking out of an Algonquin camp lodge and dragging paddle boats into the frigid, swift-moving Fox River in the early-morning hours.

They didn't realize the boats' bottom plugs had been removed for the winter, and all three boys died. The three were among 31 students from North Lawndale College Prep on the West Side who were on the last day of an eight-day ethical leadership retreat at Camp Algonquin.

He was a straight-A student at a high-performing charter school who talked of going to Ohio State or Morehouse College and dreamed of becoming a marine biologist.

His funeral was held at 10 a.m. Friday in Corbin Colonial Funeral Chapel, 5345 W. Madison St., Chicago, IL

He layed in an open silver gray casket with a fuzzy-blue Cookie Monster hat lying next to his head. Family members said it was one of his favorite possessions.

On either side of the casket, easels held enlarged photographs of the charismatic, big-hearted teen who thought he might become either a defense attorney or a psychologist. One of the photographs showed Jones, sitting in the open air, writing in his journal.
