Richard was born April 9, 1837 on the old family farm in Pennsylvania where he spent his boyhood days. The son of John Lesnett and Mary Smith Lesnett (also known as Aunt Polly), he had a love for a military life and always attended the musterings of those days. He was a good horseman and at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company K of the Pennsylvania Cavalry under Captain Boyce. He was shot May 28, 1864 at Haws Shop, Virginia in a five hour cavalry fight. There were about 3,500 men engaged in the battle. He was placed on board a boat for Washington D.C. but died on the way.
