She was the daughter of James Landrum Reed (a Methodist preacher) and his second wife, Elizabeth Jane McRee. Her mother died at a young age and she was raised by her aunt and uncle while her father was away. She married Joseph Phillip Roberts on 2 Jan 1866 in Hamilton County after he returned home from the Civil War. After several years of marriage it was discovered Philip had tuberculosis and the doctor recommended that Florida would be a good place for them to go to recuperate. However he died on January 30, 1880 in Tallahassee and was buried there. By then Margaret had five children and was expecting a sixth. Joseph Johnston Roberts was born on April 17, 1880. Sometime later, Robert Clark McRee, Jr. (uncle of Margaret) went to Florida and helped her move back to Soddy where she bought some land. Her father, Rev. James Landrum Reed, later came to make his home with them. She died on May 3, 1912 and is buried beside her father.
