On March 15, 1902, Willie Petty married 19-year-old Mary Jane Lynch in Ware County, Georgia. The couple went on to have six children together: Estelle (1906), Ruby Lee (1908), Alvin Joseph "Joe" (1910), Willie Duard "Buck" (1914), Wesley Hyrman (1917), and Lloyd (1918). Lloyd died not long after his birth, and Mary Jane passed away not long after that from complications from childbirth.
A few years later, Willie remarried to Sallie Henderson Lewis, a widow with three young children of her own (Pauline, Royce, and Ewey Ledford "E.L." Lewis). Together, Willie and Sallie had three more children: twins Pearle and Earl (1924) and Warren Vernia "Vernon" (1926). Vernon died near the end of his fourth year for reasons not stated on his death certificate.
Some time after the birth of the twins, the entire Petty family (Willie, Sallie, and all of their children) moved from southern Georgia to North Florida. Stories passed down through the years state that the move was precipitated by a fight between Willie and several other men in Georgia, one of whom ended up dead. As such, Vernon was Willie's only child who was born in Florida. Some time after Vernon's death, Willie changed the spelling of his middle name from Cuyler to Kyler. No one today is sure why he did this.
Willie died December 27, 1956, from a cerebral thrombosis resulting from advanced arteriosclerosis. He was laid to rest two days later in the Presbyterian cemetery near his home in Fairfield, Florida.
