James Howell Buehler, 80, died of natural causes at his home in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, with his wife and three children at his side.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 230 N. 10th St., with High Desert Hospice Chaplain Karen Little officiating. Private family inurnment services will be held at Klamath Memorial Park. Disposition was by Pyramid Cremations.

Jim was born on Oct. 10, 1927, in Hettinger, N.D., to Harry Richard and Evelyn B. (Powell) Buehler.
He attended the first 10 grades of school at Hettinger, where he was active in athletics. In the fall of 1944, he moved with his family to Jamestown, N.D., where he graduated from high school. While at Jamestown High School, he was active in athletics and was an all-state player in both football and basketball.
Jim attended Valley City State University and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in education. While there, he was on the college basketball and track teams. He received his master's degree in education from the University of Montana with additional work in mathematics. He also attended the University of New Mexico for four summers, studying mathematics. In addition, he attended a summer at Southern Oregon University, a summer at the University of Oregon and a summer at Penn State University, studying mathematics.
He was a mathematics teacher at Klamath Union High School from 1960 to 1986. Prior to that, he taught mathematics and coached for 10 years in North Dakota.
He was active in the Oregon Education Association and also served on the state negotiation committee representing Josephine, Jackson, Klamath and Lake counties. He also was a member of the Klamath Falls Education Association and represented city teachers in negotiations.
He coached Babe Ruth Baseball in the Suburban League in the mid 1960s. While there, he was one of the coaches whose team won third at state in 1966 and, in 1967, the team won the state championship, the Pacific Northwest Region Championship and went on to place fifth in the National Babe Ruth Tournament in Anchorage, Alaska. He loved athletics and working with young people in athletics and in teaching mathematics.
On Dec. 19, 1948, he married the former Jessie Clarice Nielson.
His main hobby was his children and grandchildren. Other hobbies included RV-ing with friends and spending winters in warmer states. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Jessie Buehler and his daughter Beth Drew and her husband David of Klamath Falls; his son Larry Buehler and his wife Nancy of Monmouth, Ore., and his daughter Jeanne Barbouletos and her husband Tim of Pendleton, Ore.; grandchildren Jeff Paslay and his wife Carrie, Gregg Paslay, Allison Buehler, Grant Buehler, and Katie and Mike Richards; a great-granddaughter McKenzie Paslay; brothers Richard Buehler of Billings, Mont., Jerome Buehler and his wife Wendy of Thermopolis, Wyo.; and a sister Janice Hoftiezer and her husband Virgil of Valparaiso, Ind.
In addition to his parents Harry and Evelyn Buehler of Denver, Colo., he was preceded in death by a brother Ronald George Buehler of Edina, Minn.
