Joseph Raymond Neal, 80, of Marble Rock, died Monday, Sept. 29, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City.

He was born June 9, 1928, in Greene, son of Frank Ray and Ruth Eikenberry Neal. On Nov. 26, 1946, he married Donna Mae Shultz at Luther Church of the Incarnate, Columbia, S.C. She died April 19, 1998.

Mr. Neal graduated from Greene Public Schools in 1946, then served in the U.S. Army with Headquarters Company in Seoul, Korea. He did carpentry work and farmed, retiri ng in 1990.

Survived by: two daughters, Bonita (Richard Cano) Neal of Lancaster, Calif., and Margaret (George) Nash of Rockford; a son, Tom (Susan) of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren, Dan (Rhonda) Neal, Stacy (Dan) Rooney, Matt (Sarah) Neal, Lucas (Amy) Neal and Aaron and Ryan Nash; six great-grandchildren, Megan, Benjamin and Brooke Neal, Brendan Rooney, Mackenzie Rooney and Aubrey Neal; two sisters, Harriet Smith of Sun City West, Ariz., and Patricia (George) Brown of Decorah; a brother-in-law, James Tyson of Terre Haute, Ind.; and a sister-in-law, Lois Adams of Marble Rock.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Robert James; and a sister, Ann Tyson.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, both in Greene. Military honors will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Joseph R. Neal Memorial Fund in care of the family at 2010 Glass Ave., Rockford, IA 50468.

Joseph was a dedicated father and grandfather, who valued special times with his family. When anyone came to visit, one would be sure to have either some homemade ice cream, popcorn or cookies before they left. As a pastime, he enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles or playing croquet. He was known as the "King of Croquet."
