CDR Donald E. Kinney, Ret. (1925-2008), passed away on Monday, September 22, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean E. Kinney, 6 children, 13 grandchildren and 8 great grand-children. Memorial services will be held Friday, September 26, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL. Following the Memorial, The Orange Park Women's Club will host a reception at the Club House, 130 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park. Jacksonville Memory Gardens will make arrangements for burial at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date. The Kinney Family requests that any donations be made to Community Hospice of NE Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257

Master craftsman dies, but work will live on. Naval veteran Don Kinney of OP came from family of artists, Services were held Friday for retired Navy pilot Don Kinney of Orange Park, who died Monday of a massive stroke at age 83. Friends and family described him as a master craftsman and true gentleman who treasured friendships and enjoyed telling jokes. A Korean War veteran, Mr. Kinney was raised in a family of artists and crafters, loved airplanes, sailing and building boats. "He was magic with wood," said his wife, Jean, who is searching for a way to display her husband's large collection of pre-World War II artifacts, photographs and documents. Meanwhile, Mr. Kinney's legacy lives on via the miniature steamboat model on display under glass at the Clarke House in Orange Park. Mr. Kinney spent about a year creating a 2-foot wooden model of the May Garner, a steamboat that carried people and cargo from Clay County from 1893 to 1923. Mr. Kinney created the boat for the Historical Society of Orange Park, of which his wife, Jean, is a member. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kinney is survived by six children, Scott, Renee, Steve B., Beth, Steven R. and Linda; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grand children. Jacksonville Memory Gardens will make arrangements for burial at the Jacksonville National Cemetery when it is opened. Memorials can be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
