Charles F. McNeil, 68, of Cliffwood, passed away at home on Friday, Sept. 12. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Hazlet for 30 years before moving to Cliffwood 13 years ago. He was a postal worker with the Shrewsbury Post Office for 34 years before retiring in 1992. Charles was a crossing guard with the Aberdeen Twp. Schools at the corner of Church and Atlantic, and he was a delivery person for the Star Ledger. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's RC Church, Keyport. A Navy veteran who served during peacetime aboard the USS Mullinitz in 1959, he was severely burned in a boiler explosion onboard the ship while in Athens, Greece.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Catherine "Kelly" McNeil; and a brother, Donald McNeil in 2005. He is survived by his wife, Julie Mayer McNeil; two sons, Thomas McNeil of Somerset and Timothy McNeil of Toms River; four sisters, Carol Flynn of Matthews, N.C., Judith Shackleton of Clark, Linda Morrow of Toms River, and Deborah McNeil of Rahway; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport; and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until a 9:15 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church, Keyport. Interment with military honors will follow at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
