DR. JAMES BARRY FLANAGAN, 78, of Memphis, internal medicine specialist employed at the Memphis Veterans Medical Center for the past 10 years, died Saturday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. He was an elder emeritus of Second Presbyterian Church, a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Memphis and a Navy veteran. Dr. Flanagan, the husband of Walterine Flanagan for 56 years, also leaves four daughters, Kathleen Engstrom of Tallahassee, Fla., Maura Halverson of Shephardstown, W.Va., Patricia Kelly Rippe of Memphis and Deirdre Cobb of Los Angeles; four sons, John Christopher Flanagan of Heraldsburg, Calif., and William Stratton Flanagan, Thomas Clark Flanagan and James Barry Flanagan Jr., all of Memphis; a brother, Terrance B. Flanagan of Slidell, La., 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorials be sent to Second Presbyterian Church, the Church Health Center or the Salvation Army.
