OBITUARY :
M.J. ZEH DIES, PHYSICIAN FOR 70 YEARS

DR. MERLIN J. ZEH, 82, of 182 3rd Ave., who has been a physician for 70 years, died this morning in Leonard Hospital, Troy, where he had a patient for one week. He had been in failing health for some time however, and in spite of it had been practicing at his home almost up until the time of his death.

In 1953 he was honored by Watervliet residents not only as one of its physicians but at that time as one of the oldest practitioners in the United States.

Dr. Zeh was born in Knox, Albany County, Aug. 2, 1867 son of the late Elias and Ann Elizabeth Osterhout Zeh. He was husband of the late Edna A. Miller Zeh. His survivors include a son, Arthur P. Zeh, and one daughter, Sister Lydia the Episcopal Order of All Saints who had been caring to her father for some time.

The funeral is to be Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 3rd Ave. Watervliet, and thence to Trinity Episcopal Church, of which he was a communicant, where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated, Interment will take place in Albany Rural Cemetery.

He was a member of the Hudson River Chapter, RAM, and Evening Star Lodge, F&AM, at Watervliet.

Members of his family, at the time of his testimonial, said that Dr. Zeh had delivered more than a thousand babies.

He attended Knox Academy and received his teaching license March 25, 1884 for the Third School District of West Troy, now Watervliet. The doctor then studied pharmacy in West Troy at several establishments. He was the 305th licensed pharmacist in New York State.

In 1887 he was appointed health officer of West Troy at a salary of $200 a year.

He received his medical degree from Union University, Albany Medical College in 1889. At the time of his graduation his class numbered 41.

He was health officer and surgeon for Breaker Island Foundries some years ago and was member of the auxiliary sfaff of the former Troy Hospital now St. Mary's Hospital of Troy.

He became a qualified medical doctor at the age of 21, for in those years the medical course was three years. He qualified in two years, however because of his pharmacy training and high grades at Albany Medical College.
