Diane Carol Slack, 70, lifelong English and art teacher, of Gilman, died Saturday (Aug. 23, 2008) at her home, following a short illness. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Redenius Funeral Home in Gilman. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilman. The Rev. John Balluff will officiate.

Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilman, at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Diane Slack Art Award.

Diane was born on April 4, 1938, in Kankakee, to Donald and Ann (Mathews) VadeBonCouer. Her childhood was spent in Bradley. She attended St. Joseph Elementary School and graduated from Bradley Community High School. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Southern Illinois University, where she attended from 1956-1960. Diane began her teaching in 1960-1961 in Kankakee at East Junior High School. She then moved to Gilman and taught from 1961-1964 at Gilman High School. From 1965-1967 she was a part-time teacher at Onarga High School. Diane returned to Gilman High School to teach for another 30 years, retiring in 1998. She also taught oil painting classes through Kankakee Community College.

She married Daniel J. Slack on July 15, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradley. He survives.

Other survivors include three children, Douglas of Lincoln, Lynne and Jon Pubentz of York, S.C., Greg of Ashkum; and four grandchildren, Kaitlin, Ryan and Logan Pubentz, and Aaron Slack.

Her parents are deceased.

Diane was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Gilman. She was also a member of the Rotary Club, Tuesday Ladies Golf Club, education surrogate at Nexus in Onarga, Gilman/Danforth Library Board officer and Book Club member, and Arts Committee for Gilman Old Boys and Old Girls Reunions. Diane was an avid reader and enjoyed golfing, traveling and visiting with friends and former students.
