Confederate Civil War Veteran. Sergent James R. Beard was born in Bladen County, N.C. He was mortally wounded in combat during the battle of Savannah, Ga. and died December 30, 1864, not 1861 as depicted on the headstone. He was buried on a nearby plantation and re-interned into Laurel Grove Cemetery. He also had two brothers that served with the Confederacy both being taken prisoner during the fall of Ft. Fisher, N.C.

Killed in action in Savannah, Ga. Age 49 years.
