Lavernor Laveon Lanier Jr.
Feb. 17, 1923 ~ Aug. 12, 2008

Wewahitchka mourns the loss of Lavernor Laveon Lanier Jr., longtime resident, beekeeper and businessman. L.L., as he was known to his friends, was born Feb. 17, 1923, and passed from this life Aug. 12, 2008, at Bay Medical Center with his son at his side.

L.L. graduated from Wewahitchka High School in 1941 and went to work for the U.S. Engineering Steamboat Co. for two years, Magnolia Petroleum Co. for five years and United States Department of Agriculture for four years. In 1953, he returned to Wewahitchka and took over the Lanier family beekeeping business, producing the famous Tupelo honey that he shipped all over the world, and still was a mentor to his son, Ben, who has taken over the business.

He was a Shriner, an officer in the Tupelo Masonic Lodge, and director on the Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative board for 36 years, serving as president for six years. He also served on the Florida Rural Electric Cooperative Board and the Florida Farm Bureau Board, and was a member of the Beekeepers Association.

L.L. Lanier never met a stranger and was an inspiration to thousands of people all around the world. He always had a story to tell you about some experience he had or the history of Wewa or some of its residents. He also loved talking about the history of Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha Lanier of Wewahitchka; one son, Ben Lanier and wife, Glynnis, of Beacon Hill, Fla.; and one grandson, Heath Lanier. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lavernor Laveon Lanier Sr. and Kate Jones Lanier; a son, Lavernor Laveon Lanier III; a brother, Edgar Lanier; and a sister, Betty Vista.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. today, Aug. 14, 2008, at Jehu Cemetery under the direction of Comforter Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you purchase a book and donate it to the Charles Whitehead Library in Wewahitchka in memory of Lavernor Laveon Lanier Jr., because he was an avid reader and thought others should share his passion for books.
