Professional Boxer. A native of Muskegon, Michigan, he was a top ranked contender in the lightweight division during the 1950s and 1960s. The southpaw fought some of the best fighters of that era including Paddy DeMarco, Ralph Dupas, Johnny Gonsalves and Virgil Akins. He lost two title bouts to Carlos Ortiz in 1959 and 1964 and lost a 15 round decision to Lightweight Champion Joe Brown on July 23, 1958. On August 19, 1963, Lane defeated Paul Armstead to win Michigan's version of the World Lightweight Title. In 1982 after a seventeen year absence from the ring, Lane returned for four more fights winning three at the age of 50. In 100 bouts, he compiled a record of 82 wins (19 knockouts), 16 losses and 2 draws. He was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004. Lane's brother Pearce was a boxer with the US Team during the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He died from a heart attack while golfing.
