Subsequently, due to his injuries he died in the Veterans Hospital in Kennebac, Maine as was buried in Togus National Cemetery. His wife was Bridget McMahon, also from County Clare, Ireland for whom he sent his monies earned while a soldier to the NY Emigrant Bank for their future. Later it was recorded in the bank the sum of monies deposited were for "Bridget McMahon" as they were yet to be married and it also indicated that he paid for her passage to America. It was noted that upon her arrival she went to work as a domestic until he completed his service in the war and they were married. They had three children, namely, William, Thomas & Mary Sexton.
