A native of Madison County, he had lived most of his life in Buncombe County. Ernest was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during WWII, as a Staff Sergeant, and present at the Battle of the Bulge, during which time he received the Purple Heart Award. Following his military service, Ernest was employed with Biltmore Dairy for 36 years having served in various capacities. After retirement he and his wife Alice raised beef cattle. He was also a member of Oak Forest Presbyterian Church.
He was the son of the late A.G. and Belvie Payne Henderson. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice Melinda Brown Henderson; a grandson, David William Franks; and brothers: John Wade Henderson and Mallie Henderson.
