According to his obituary, for 35 years he was an employee of the Boston & Albany railroad [a mechanic], leaving that position to take charge of the steam roller work for the town of West Springfield, a position which he held for 12 years (before retiring in about the 1920's). According to his death certificate and obituary, "[f]or a number of years, he [was] night watchman at the town barns." At one point he owned a grocery store.
