John Joseph Murphy was born in Ireland on December 23, sometime between 1843 and the 1850's. His parents were John and Bridget [Leavitt] Murphy of Ireland. John Joseph Murphy immigrated to the United States in about 1869 and became a naturalized citizen in about 1873.

He married Kate Doyle at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Holyoke, Massachusetts on February 11, 1879. They lived on Baldwin Street in West Springfield, Massachusetts. According to his obituary, for 35 years he was an employee of the Boston & Albany railroad [a mechanic], leaving that position to take charge of the steam roller work for the town of West Springfield, a position which he held for 12 years (before retiring in about the 1920's). According to his death certificate and obituary, "[f]or a number of years, he [was] night watchman at the town barns." At one point he owned a grocery store.
