Enlisted in Company B, Captain William Cass Drake's Co., 30th Reg't NC Infantry (State Troops) on August 16, 1861 in Warren County at age 47. In 1863, he had a son also named William Green Haithcock. He was mustered out in 1862 and was discharged from the CSA for being over age in 1864. In 1893, he signed with an X on a document certifying that he had served honorably in the CSA and that his present condition rendered him unable to provide for himself unaided. He applied for admission to the North Carolina Soldier's Home at Raleigh. He was a widower at this time and his nearest relatives were listed as his sons Whit and Turner.
