Verlie Thomas McDonald, 80, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Sain officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, at the funeral home.

V.T. was born in Munger, Texas, to the late Cecil Minton and Maggie Katherine (Thomas) McDonald. He graduated from Prairie Hill High School in 1945, and joined the U.S. Army in February, 1946. He served as a paratrooper with the 11th Air Borne Division during World War II and was honorably discharged in August, 1947. On July 27, 1946, he married Mary Hargrove in Dallas. He was a foreman at MENASCO Mfg. Co. for 28 years until retiring. He ranched and served as a deacon at Prairie Hill Baptist Church for many years. V.T. was a very loving husband, father and grandfather and was a devoted friend to many.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise McDonald, twin of John D. McDonald, in 1976.

Survivors include his wife, Mary H. McDonald, of Waco; daughter, Vee Elizabeth-Kathlene Potter, of Tyler; son, MSGT USAF Ret. John D. McDonald and wife, Dottie, of Conroe; grandchildren, Clint Bauer and wife, Michelle, Joshua J. McDonald, Chaplain CPT Peter J. McDonald and wife, Abbie, and Elizabeth J. McDonald; great-granddaughters, Lea Joy and Emily Hope McDonald; sisters, Romona Archer, of Marshall, Bobbie Green, of Mexia, and Ruby Shanks and husband, Melvin, of Arlington; brother, Jim R. McDonald and wife, Judy, of Midlothian; and several nieces and nephews.
