Howard Ring Hester
Graveside service for retired Staff Sgt. Howard Ring Hester, 80, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, with Jim Antwine officiating.

Sgt. Howard died Friday, July 4, 2008, in Lawton.

Service with military honors will be under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

He was born May 24, 1928, in Charlotte, N.C., to Leonard W. and Florence Sarah Ring Hester. Shortly after his birth, the family returned to Gardiner, Maine, where he lived with his grandparents and legal guardians, Howard E. and Ella M. Purdy Ring. He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1945. He served in the Navy for four years. In 1949, he joined the Army and was assigned to the 1st. Cavalry Division (INF) in Japan. His unit was deployed to Korea at the start of the Korean War in 1950, and he served in Korea for 16 months before he was rotated back to the United States. He served duty tours in Thule, Greenland, Germany and various stateside installations before retiring in June 1968. He served in the military for more than 22 years. He married Dolores Claire Hanson in January 1952 in Gardiner, Maine. He earned the following medals and accomodations: World War II Victory Medal; Army of Occupation (Japan) Medal; Korean Service Medal with six bronze stars; National Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal (Army); Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army); Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation; Army Commendation Medal and Chryssoun Aristeion Andrias Unit Citation (Greece). After he retired from the military, he worked for Hawthorne Aviation for nine years at Henry Post Air Field, Fort Sill. He then worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., as the first line manager for 10 years. He retired in 1992 from Northrop World Wide Aircraft Service at the Department of Logistics as a lead man of the Electronic Equipment Repair Shop.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; three children and their spouses: Eric and Brenda Webster Hester, Diane Sarah Hester Fink and Laurie Louise Hester and John, all of Lawton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
