Marie C. Mattern, 70, of the Green Ridge section, died Saturday evening in at VNA Hospice of Community Medical Center.



Born Jan. 11, 1938, in Scranton, daughter of the late Carl and Sarah Fortuna Mattern, she was a 1956 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Before retirement, she was employed for 30 years by Keystone Printed Specialities, Old Forge, where she was office manager. She had been previously employed by Capitol Records in its Scranton division. She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church.

An avid sports fan, she especially enjoyed the New York Yankees. She also enjoyed fishing, bowling and golf and playing baseball in her younger days. She was a loving and kind person who was known for her big heart. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are two sisters, Elizabeth A. Walters, with whom she resided; and Carolyn Besket, Elmhurst; nieces and nephews, including Katherine Walters, also with whom she resided; Susan M. Whitley, Scranton; Laurie McDonald, Madison Township; David Walters, Barto; Donald Walters, Dalton; Thomas Besket, Madison Township; James Besket, Elmhurst; and nieces and nephews in Youngstown, Ohio; grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl "Sam" Mattern, in 1998.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., by the Rev. Ginger Daubenhauser. Interment, Dunmore Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice at Community Medical Center, 1800 Mulberry St., 18510.
