RICHARD H. BASSETT , 94; ARTIST, LED MILTON ACADEMY DEPARTMENT
Richard H. Bassett, an artist and former head of the art department at Milton Academy, died Monday in a nursing home in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 94. Born in Durham, N.C., Mr. Bassett was raised in Northampton and was a longtime Milton resident. He graduated in 1916 from Phillips Academy in Andover and cum laude from Harvard College in 1920.

Mr. Bassett, who bridged impressionism and modernism, studied with Swiss painter Henri Edouard Bercher and with Percyval Tudor-Hart in both Paris and London.

"He was an active painter for 80 years, became a modernist and remained open to new ideas till his illness," said D. Roger Howlett, president of Boston's Childs Gallery.

A vigorous man until his recent illness, Mr. Bassett was in his 90s when he learned from his son, Edward, how to use a home computer so he could write on art education.

Mr. Bassett concentrated on scenes in New England and France and his works were exhibited frequently, including at the Fogg Museum in 1980 and most recently in 1993 in the St. Botolph Club in Boston, of which he was a member.

After serving in Army intelligence during World War II, he established the art department at Milton Academy, and led that from 1945 to 1965, when he retired.

He was the editor of "The Open Eye of Learning," a collection of essays on art education published by the MIT Press in 1969.

He leaves his wife, Eleanor Scott Goldbloom; a son, Edward, of Durham, N.C., and a nephew, John Bassett of Brookline.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Milton Academy.
