"Sam" was born Szyje Schmuel Schwartzberg in Goroktovets, Russia, on 29 Aug 1877. His father was Yosef and mother not listed in any records. 1885 Census in Grabovitz (Goroktovets) he was listed with three other brothers named Schrool (also called Sam in the USA) Abraham, Mojsche (called Morris in the USA), and a sister, Rachel, who married his friend Max Nadler who had earlier immigrated to NY and whom he lived with temporarily when he arrived in Dec 1910.
Prior to his departure from Hamburg Germany his records indicated that he was married 23 Aug 1900 to Rachel Rozbekoit, and had five children. Their names & dates of birth were: Hyman, 1901; Annie, 1903; Schrool, 1905; Bertha, 1907 & Yetta, 1909. The entire family was killed in an uprising in Yartsevo Rail Station in 1914 presumably on their way towards freedom. They did not have immigration visas granted because of strict laws governing the laws at that time. All documented through Jewish Daily Gazette daily paper in New York.
Noted that Sam went and applied for citizenship Petition on the same day he arrived in the States. On the Naturalization document he lists his wife and 5 children along with their dates and places of birth; his residence; and witnesses.
He enlisted with the New York U.S. Guards on 12 Sep 1918, serial number 2670159, noted on the card that he was widowed, and nearest relative was Max Nadler, his sister's husband. He was honorably discharged as Private 1st Class from Company B 12th Battalion.
Sam was the great grand uncle of Elliott S. Bergen, born 29 May 1974, son of Joel Alexander Bergen, 1943-2012. His mother was Pauline Schwartzberg, 1917-2004, daughter of Samuel Sckool, 1878-1933; Samuel Sckool was the brother of Szyje Schmuel "Sam" Schwartzberg.
