"Nor shall the tyrant's rage
Too long oppress the saints
The God of Wrath will support
His children lest they faint"
Jephthah's stone appears to have been made by J. Turner, a Westfield carver who was influenced by the great NJ stonecutter Ebenezer Price of Elizabeth. Turner's work was less refined than Price's, however, a difference that's often readily seen in the treatment of the soul effigy's wings. His name also appears on the D.A.R. Monument in the churchyard of the First Presbyterian Church of Orange, which honors those who fought for American independence.
