Howard E. Putnam Jr., 76, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at the Life Care Center. Born Feb. 12, 1930, in Washington, D.C., he lived in Escondido for 36 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean and Vietnam wars as a master sergeant. He had a bachelor's degree. He enjoyed politics and was affiliated with Mission San Luis Rey and St. Patrick's Church. Mr. Putnam Jr. was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Catherine Putnam of Escondido, in 2005. He is survived by his sons, Lewis David Putnam and Peter Patrick Putnam, both of San Jacinto, Paul Joseph Putnam of Spring Valley, Howard Christopher Putnam of Oceanside, Marcus A. Putnam of Virginia Beach, Va., Tony B. Putnam Rogers of Arizona; daughter Holly Putnam Burch of Escondido; and 13 grandchildren. A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside. Oceanside Mortuary is handling arrangements.
