US Congressman. Born at his family's estate, "Windsor Castle", Smith graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1805, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1808, and practiced law in Smithfield, while also operating Windsor Castle. An active member of the Isle of Wight County Militia, he served in the War of 1812 and attained the rank of Colonel. Smith served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1818 to 1820. In 1820 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican. He was reelected in 1822 as a Crawford Republican, and served from 1821 to 1825. He did not run for reelection in 1824 and returned to practicing law. Smith served again in the House of Delegates from 1836 to 1841. In 2007 the Town of Smithfield was in the process of converting the lands around the Windsor Castle home to a 42 acre recreation area. The Windsor Castle home still stands and has most recently been operated as a privately owned bed and breakfast.
