The son of Richard & Rebecca Sharpless (Cassin) Thatcher, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster July 13, 1864, overstating his age by one year, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 17 as a private with Co. C in the hundred-day organization of the 195th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted and mustered into federal service in the field at Monocacy Junction, Frederick County, Maryland, September 4, 1864, as a private with Co. B in the one-year organization of the 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865.He married Mary Hibbard November 16, 1876, in West Chester, Chester County, and fathered William Hibbard (b. 02/09/79), Herbert Spencer (b. 09/28/82), Richard (b. 10/02/84), Alfred Haviland (b. 11/07/87), Charles Garrett (b. 10/20/91), and Mary Alberta (b. 07/04/95). He died while attending a meeting of the Society of Friends, the cause listed as "acute cardiac dilatation of the heart" with "chronic myocarditis" a contributing factor. Contributor: Dennis Brandt
