David worked at the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks at Lake Perry for 33 years. He was a member of the Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. He was past master of Masonic Lodge 14 A.F. and A.M., past worthy patron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 62 and the Scottish Rite Bodies and Arab Shrine of Topeka. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, National Trappers Association and Ducks Unlimited.

He married Robin Frances Crawford on April 19, 1980, in Oskaloosa. Their only child Jacob died in a car accident on June 28, 2002.

He was survived by his wife, parents, two sisters, and nieces and nephews.
