Obituary & Biographical Sketch of Fred A. Hillig -

Fred A. Hillig was born July 7, 1842 in Saxony, Oldenberg, Germany and departed this life after a brief illness, February 16, 1925 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Clara Fricke in St. Louis, Mo., age 82 years, seven months and nine days. At the age of 14 he left his widowed mother and came to America. He first went to Wisconsin. In 1859 he came to Illinois, first accepting a position as a farm hand near Lynnville. The greater part of his life was spent on the farm. In 1862 at the age of 20 he enlisted in Company I 115th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers under the command of Colonel Kinman. He fought in the battle of Chicamauga on Sept. 20, 1863, where he was shot with a rifle bullet which was not extracted until 1873. He received his discharge three years later. He was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Rieman in 1868. To this union seven children were born, two preceded the father in death. Fred passing away Aug. 31, 1903 and Gus, May 16, 1904. This happy marriage relationship was severed by the death of the wife November 10, 1905. Mr. Hillig was always interested in the welfare of his community and the public at large. He served faithfully as county commissioner for two terms being nominated by acclamation for the second term in the democratic county convention in August, 1901. He retired from the farm in 1904 and has spent most of his time here. He united with the Methodist church in 1877, and has been a faithful and consistent member ever since. He enjoyed good health until about three weeks ago when he suffered a stroke, finally passing out of this life February 16. He leaves to mourn his departure five children, Mrs. Clara Fricke, St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Mame Hamman, Meredosia, Ill.; Mrs. Mildred Rieman, Pearl, Ill.; Mrs. Hattie Ready, Branson, Mo.; and Lawrence Hillig of Milton, Ill., besides 14 grandchidren and many other relatives and a host of friends. In his passing the family have sustained the loss of a loving father and grandfather and the community a good neighbor and citizen. Funeral services were held from the M.E. Church in this place Thursday afternoon, Feb. 19 at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. W.D. Heidenreich, pastor of St. John's Lutheran church assisted by Rev. L.T. Henninger, Pastor of the M.E. Church. Beautiful hymns were sung by a quartet composed of H.D. Berger, Hal Naylor, Rev. W.C. Heidenreich and Louis Yeck with Mrs. Hal Naylor at the piano. A vocal duet was also rendered by Rev. and Mrs. L.T. Henninger. The many and beautiful floral tributes expressive of sympathy and respect were cared for by Misses Alleane Unland, Annabelle Hyde, Olivia Driscoll and Madeline Schmitt. The bearers were L.F. Berger, Frank Butcher, Walter Alhorn, Henry Deppe, W.A. Schmitt and Clyde McAllister. At the conclusion of the services the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Oakland cemetery. Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Fricke of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. L.A. Ready of Branson, Mo.; Mrs. Robert Gregory of Missouri City, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rieman of Pearl, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hillig and family of Milton, Ill. and Mrs. Edward Streuter of Jacksonville, Ill.
