David Edward Hinkel, 70, of McFarland, Wis., formerly of Dubuque, found peace with his Lord on Monday, May 19, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at noon, Friday, May 23, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Monona, with the Rev. John Meinholz officiating. Burial will be in Town of Dunn Burial Grounds, Town of Dunn. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

He was born on July 5, 1937, in Dubuque, the only son of Francis (Frank) and Helen (Hilken) Hinkel. He grew up in Dubuque where he attended Loras Academy and Loras College, and earned his B.A. in English in 1959. He especially enjoyed serving as sports editor for the school papers, working on the yearbooks and participating in the drama clubs.

Dave also was very proud of his ROTC training and service in the Army Reserves after college graduation.

His city childhood was dotted with lots of visits to the family farm and hunting and fishing on the Mississippi River, which he remembered with great fondness.

In 1960, he met and married his wife, Nancy (Goley) Hinkel, of Harvey, Ill. Together they had five children.

For the past 37 years, Dave and Nancy lived in their home in the Town of Dunn, rebuilding after the tornado of 1992. Their home has been the site of many family gatherings, where he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and play in the yard.

Dave spent his working years in service to others through employment with JCPenney, Coyt International, JoAnn Fabrics and Radio Shack. His strong work ethic lives on through his children and grandchildren.

In his retirement, he enjoyed taking day trips with his wife, strolling through art fairs and antique shops and sampling local eateries. Fishing with his son-in-law, Chris and sharing stories of his youth became another favorite way to spend a few hours, and the annual family camp built a great store of memories for all to share.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy; five children, David, Jr., of Stoughton, and his children, Jessica (David) Dargenio (and their son, Logan), Erica (Kurt) Mulder, and Cassandra Hinkel, Michael (Carolyn) Hinkel, of DeForest, and their children, Tony and Allison; Lisa (Michael) McCulloch, of Cottage Grove, and their daughter Erin, Susan (Chris) Cook, of Stoughton, and their daughters, Ellen and Ava; and Sara (partner, Kerri Lehman), of Madison; his aunt, Jean Hufnagel and uncle, Ken (Mary) Hinkel, of Dubuque; and many loved cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
