Christopher O'Leary, 34, was someone that served the community as a part of his job. He worked as a behavioral scientist with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. His job was to track and help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among some of the area's most at-risk people. He was scheduled to be a featured speaker at a conference at UC San Francisco.
He was a Sacramento native and had won a full scholarship to UCLA. He graduated summa cum laude, and received another full scholarship to the University of Michigan. It was there that he earned a doctorate in medical anthropology and also met his wife, Michelle Rose, a Psychotherapist.
They had moved to their newly purchased home in North East Los Angeles, 3 mos prior. They shared their home with their dogs, Flor, a terrier mix, and Spike, a Chihuahua.
Christopher, fluent in four languages, loved traveling, running, cooking, arts, and just hanging out at the house with his wife and dogs. He was interested in getting a dog park together that would also serve as a playground for neighborhood children.
Midday on the 20th, nervous about the conference he was leaving for the next day, he made a run to the market for some rarely smoked cigarettes. About that time his wife was headed to the gym. After buying the cigarettes he ducked around the corner to smoke out of eyeshot of the neighborhood kids. His wife decided not to go to the gym and headed back home. As she neared, she saw paramedics working in the street. She recognized her husband by his Michigan State sweatshirt. He had been shot in the upper torso and the paramedics were working diligently to save his life.
The police said nothing had been taken and there was no logic to this shooting. Witnesses gave descriptions and local surveillance tapes led to a minor that was a total stranger to his victim. It is still unclear as to why he was shot. Police stated it was possibly a purely random act of violence.
Christopher was taken to the hospital and that night he was pronounced brain dead. At that time he became an organ donor and his gift of life positively affected 9-20 people that were awaiting donations. Even in death, Christopher O'Leary is helping people.
His final resting place is Hollywood Forever Cemetery. He was a fan of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration there and it makes sense that he would rest there.

Christopher had a brother, Sean, and a sister, Catherine, who he adored and loved. He was a role model, friend and mentor to them. They mutually loved and adored one another. They were three peas in a pod. Christopher's loss was devastating to his mother, Regina, father, Michael, stepfather, Michael, grandparents, Gerald, Nellie, and numerous aunts and uncles. He made everyone feel as they were the most important person in the world. He has been sorely missed by all.
