James Shoults Dies, Interment In Jay Em


Funeral service was held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Torrington for James Shoults, 81, who died at the Torrington hospital Wednesday August 1. Interment was in the Jay Em Cemetery.

James Alan Shoults was born at Chadron, Neb. December 7, 1891, the son of James M. and Cora Agnus (Boomer) Shoults. He came with his parents to Guernsey while a small boy and grew up in that area.

In 1913 he homesteaded 17 miles north of Guernsey and in 1922 he moved to Casper and was employed as a blacksmith by Standard Oil until 1928 when he moved to Jay Em and opened his own shop. In 1945 he moved to Torrington and operated a blacksmith shop there until his retirement in 1960.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge # 48 in Torrington.

Mr. Shoults was married to the former Olive Agnes Bailey at Glenwood Springs, Colo., September 12, 1913. She died in 1972. He was married to Mrs. Lela Cowan Hammerlun at Lusk Aug. 24, 1972.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Rex, Van Tassel and Wes, Torrington; a daughter, Mrs. James M. (Thelma) Harris, Jay Em; a step-son, Carroll Hammerlun of Guernsey; a step-daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Geraldine) Sleeger, Henry; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

One son, five sisters and one brother died previously.
