Mr. John Thomas "Jack" Hancock, pioneer citizen and former county official, died last Thursday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Minton, in the city, at the advanced age of seventy-three years. For some years past he had been in failing health at his home at Bostwick, and a short while ago he was moved to Palatka in order that he might receive better medical attention. However, his condition steadily grew more alarming, and for several days his death was regarded as merely a matter of hours. Hence the news of his demise occasioned no surprise to the community.
Mr. Hancock was one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of this section of Florida. Having resided in the Bostwick district since the early pioneer days, he was for years a conspicuous figure in the political life of the county. For a number of years he was a member of the Board of County Commissioners and rendered valuable and satisfactory service not only to his district, but to the county at large.
He joined the Baptist Church in early youth and was ever a faithful and consistent member of that faith. He was a prominent Mason, and consistently followed the lofty tenets and teachings of that great fraternity. He is survived by his aged wife, and several children, including a daughter, Mrs. W. H. Minton of this city, and a son, Mr. R. J. Hancock, clerk of the circuit court for Putnam county and formerly tax collector.
In their great sorrow the family have the sincere sympathy of many friends.
The funeral was held early Friday afternoon from the Minton home in the West End, Rev. R. L. Bonsteel, of the Baptist Church, officiating. The remains were sent on the 2 o'clock train to Bostwick for interment in the family section of the cemetery there. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 26 Jan 1917.)
