United States Marine Corps General. A four-star general and highly-decorated officer, he served as the 29th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps from 1987 until 1991 during the Administrations of Presidents Ronald W. Reagan and George H.W. Bush. A versatile athlete during his years at Rahway High School in New Jersey, he participated in football, baseball, and basketball. In 1950, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps and was commissioned a second lieutenant. During the Korean War, he saw combat with the 11th and 7th Marine Regiments, 1st Marine Division, and during the Vietnam War, he received a Silver Star for his heroic actions (1967) when he cleared a minefield and led his fellow Marines out of harm's way. Additionally, he was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and four Bronze Stars. General Gray was the subject of several books based on his military career. He died in a Virginia hospice care facility at the age of 95.
