Her age in records suggests this lady was born about 1814-1815. Oh, spelling, especially spelling from "back then" when so little was standard. Records show this lady and her family as Shorton, Shortin, Shorden and Shorten. The last one wins as occurring with the greatest frequency.

It is unknown at this time if this lady is my relation. An old letter from an undertaker indicates some related Shortons are buried with my Storkey family over at Leverington Cemetery in Philadelphia, but we also have a likely-related Weir at this cemetery, St. David's, too. It seemed possibly linked that a Shorton/Shorten is here as well. For now it's a mystery to be investigated. One item of note: Besides their home at 175 Cotten (which they lost in a sherriff's sale) church records record the Shorten family on Ogle where my Merkert/Kimpel family lived some years. The address in the church records is hard to make out but definitely begins with a "4" and is four digits, which is my family's old neck of the woods.

Olivia appears like this on the 1880 census:

Name Olivia Shortin
Residence Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Birth date 1815
Birth place Delaware, United States
Relationship to head-of-household Wife
Spouse name Bengaman Shortin
Spouse birth place England
Father birth place Delaware, United States
Mother birth place Delaware, United States
Race or color (expanded) White
Ethnicity American
Gender Female
Marital status Married
Age 65 years
Occupation At Home
NARA film number T9-1180
Page 43
Page letter A
Entry number 5248
Film number 1255180

The household in 1880 continues:
Bengaman Shortin
34 Son
Amy Shortin
26 Daughter (should be "in law" as Amy nee Thomas wed son Benjamin)
George Shortin
7 Son (perhaps grandson)
Ella Shortin
5 Daughter (perhaps granddaughter)

which contradicts the death info stating Olivia was born in England.

In 1870 she and family are recorded:
Benjamin Shorden
55
Alveria Shorden 55
Benjamin Shorden
24
Ezra Shorden
22

You'd almost think it could be another family but it's not- this was also in Manayunk and son Benjamin/Bengaman is a perfect 10 years younger.

And in 1860:

Benjamin Shorten
45 (supposedly born in England)
Olivia Shorten
45 (supposedly born in PA so we now have 3 different birthplaces)
Benjamin Shorten 14
Ezra A Shorten
11

And 1850, still in Manayunk:

Benjamin Shorten
35
Olivia Shorten
35
Benjamin Shorten 4
Ezra Shorten
1

In 1931, when Olivia's son Ezra died at the Old Man's Home at 39th and Powelton, his death certificate said his father Benjamin was born in England, and Olivia herself was born there too... so we may never know the truth. Was it Delawre, Pennsylvnia or England? But that certificate also finally gives us her maiden name of Beale.
