March 12, 1859: The different companies composing the 35th Regiment are commanded to assemble at their respective places of muster on Saturday, the 2nd Day of April, 1859. The Commandments will keep the men on duty for two hours at least, and shall cause the roll to be called and all delinquents noted.
The following officers were present at a Regimental Court of Enquiry held for the 35th Regiment of Virginia Militia at Wythe Court House on the 25th Day of February, 1859.
L.P. Hoyt, Colonel in Command
Robert Sayers Jr., Lieutenant-Colonel
William Raper, Major
and Captains: J. M. Grayson, Newton H. Repass, John Trigg Halsey, Anderson Arnold, William H. McMillan
Died bet Bet. April - November 1864
From Mr. S. Rush Crockett:
"Birdie Ellsworth of Mason City, Iowa (descended from John Bateman and Kiturah Halsey) had heard about John Trigg Halsey being murdered by his brother-in-law, Madison Shelton, and she wanted to know if I knew any details about the murder. I asked Elmer Williams what he knew about it. I believe John Trigg Halsey was Elmer's great grandfather. Elmer said that Shelton was living in a log cabin, now gone, that stood near the present Albert place in the Cove. It seemed that Trigg Halsey was trying to get Shelton to move and he wouldn't leave. So Trigg Halsey took a fence rail and was attempting to knock down the chimney that stood outside the cabin. Shelton came out and shot him. Evidently he thought by tearing down the chimney Shelton would have to move."
Madison Shelton removed to Knox Co, KY
