Jesse W. Rice was born in Union County, Georgia, Sept. 19, 1890. While a small boy his parents moved to Barry County and until their death had lived a few miles north of Wheaton.

Soon after the United States entered the war, Jesse was called to the service of his country and served 12 months with the overseas forces receiving an honorable discharge June 5, 1919.

Two days later he was united in marriage with Miss Medah Tarvin, one of the communities best young ladies and until a few weeks ago their life had been pleasant and full of promise.

Appendicitis brought sorrow to the home where happiness had weighed so shortly. After spending three weeks in a hospital in Springfield where he was operated upon, he returned home and death occurred Oct. 12, 1919.

In the death of Mr. Rice the community has lost a young man of honest, ambitious and upright character of whom we were justly proud. A home has been broken up, friends and relatives have suffered the loss of one they held dear, but the thought that he was a Christian robs death of it's bitterness.

Jesse is survived by a wife, four sisters, Mrs. Joe Ghan and Mrs. Ted Ghan of Wheaton. Mrs. G. E. Tate of Parsons Kansas and Miss. Bessie Rice of Kansas City, a brother, Clyde who is now serving in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Vicksburg now in Alaska waters, and a half brother, William Rice of near Wheaton.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Goodnight at Muncy Chapel Tuesday evening and interment made in the Muncy Cemetery.

The wife and relatives have the sympathy of an entire community in their sad bereavement.
