Politician. Dr. Michael Perry Gomez, better known as Dr. Perry Gomez, was born in the Out Islands in the Bahamas. He attended Western Junior School and the Government High School in Nassau, Bahamas, before completing his bachelor's degrees in Medicine and Surgery at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica in 1971. He continued his education and, in doing so, completed a research fellowship in infectious diseases in 1975.

In 1977, he became the infectious disease consultant at Princess Margaret Hospital. As a result of the first diagnosed case of HIV/AIDs in the Bahamas in 1985, he was chosen by the Bahamian government to be the National Director of the HIV/AIDS Program. He also published many articles in medical journals and delivered lectures at several universities. He has also been consulted by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC). He was appointed by Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie to chair a Blue Ribbon Commission in 2006, which investigated and designed the National Health Insurance (NHI) program. He was president of the Medical Association of the Bahamas. He was Standing Chair of the Executive Council of the Caribbean HIV and AIDS Regional Training Initiative and served as Co-Chair of the regional initiative for the Elimination of Vertical Transmission of HIV and Syphilis. He was a member of the Executive Board of PANCAP. He also was a Member of Parliament and was sworn in as Minister of Health of the Bahamas on May 10, 2012.

In his career, he met with Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie in 2004 and U.S. President Bill Clinton in 2005. He was awarded the "Merit Award of the Government of the Bahamas" in 1998; was admitted to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2003; was named "Civil Society Person of the Year of the Bahamas" and received the Bahama Journal's "Person of the Year" Award in 2005; received the Sir Linden Pindling Award for Excellence and the PANCAP Award for Excellence in 2010.
