John Frank Henning, 89, of Union passed away October 17, 2023 after a short stay in the hospital.
He is survived by his two sons John (Sue) and their children Ava (Landon) Crull and son Sutton, Tess, and John Ross (Keridan); Joe (Liz) and their children Stephanie (Dave) Fanthorpe and their children June and Avett, Ben, and Jesse (Sarah) and son Jackson. Also surviving is his sister Bernice Hoffman, sister-in-law Sharon Henning, and dear friend and companion Marion Ernesti.
John was proceded in death by his wife Carol (Shadle); his parents John L. and Louise (Kahl); his brother James and brother-in-law Howard Hoffman.
John was born at home on June 2, 1934 and grew up on the family farm near Harmony. He attended Marengo High School and graduated in 1952. Following his graduation, he was elected Secretary of the State FFA Organization and the same year he was awarded the degree of Star State Farmer. John served as a cook in the Army in Puerto Rico. Upon his return, he and Carol wed on September 21, 1957 and enjoyed 40 years together raising their sons on the farm. John served on the Marengo District 154 School Board for 25 years. He was a member of Trinity and Zion Lutheran Churches and served on many boards and committees. John enjoyed traveling and loved sharing stories of his trips. He loved to visit and gather with his family, his cousins, and his high school classmates. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his friends from Belvidere.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 5PM to 8:30PM at Zion Lutheran Church, 412 Jackson St, Marengo, IL 60152. A continued visitation will be held Saturday, October 21, 2023 from 9AM to 11AM at Zion Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will immediately follow.
